AstraZeneca, the maker of the Covishield Covid-19 vaccine, has acknowledged potential side effects related to the vaccine. In a legal document submitted to the High Court of Justice in London, the company admitted that in very rare cases, the vaccine can induce Thrombosis with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (TTS).

What is TTS?

Thrombosis with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (TTS) is a medical condition characterized by the formation of blood clots (thrombosis) alongside a low count of blood platelets (thrombocytopenia). Blood clots can obstruct blood vessels, while platelets are crucial for blood clotting.

Symptoms of TTS

Symptoms can be severe and include persistent headaches, blurred vision, chest pain, shortness of breath, leg swelling, or continuous abdominal discomfort. Easy bruising or small blood spots beneath the skin, beyond the injection site, can also indicate TTS.

How Did This Come to Light?

AstraZeneca faced a class action lawsuit in the UK over allegations that its vaccine caused fatalities and severe injuries. The first case was filed in 2023 by Jamie Scott, who experienced a permanent brain injury shortly after receiving the vaccine. AstraZeneca has accepted that its Covid vaccine can, in very rare cases, cause TTS.

Legal Proceedings

As of the latest report, 51 cases have been filed seeking compensation, with estimates as high as UK pound 100 million. AstraZeneca has admitted that its vaccine could lead to TTS in rare instances, although the precise causal mechanism remains unknown.
